Sample 4

I was first introduced to Diagnostic Radiology during anatomy lectures and laboratory studies in my first year of medical school. These early encounters were mainly limited to viewing plain film radiographs. I was intrigued as I realized the depth of information one can obtain from a single plain film. Up until that point I really knew nothing about this area of medicine and a plain film radiograph was simply a gray-scale picture to me. My interest grew as I began to recognize the realm of Diagnostic Radiology. With its vast array of investigative tools and procedures it truly is a key to unlocking a world of diagnostic information. It was later during my clerkship rotations when caring for patients that I gained a full appreciation of the pivotal role the radiologist plays in patient management and I became enthralled with the idea of working in this field. Since then I have thoroughly investigated Diagnostic Radiology as a possible career choice through the completion of several electives, research, and discussion with residents and staff in this field. These experiences have solidified my decision.

It became evident to me during my clinical experiences that Radiology is a very challenging profession. Radiologists must ascertain and maintain exceptional technical skills. They must also acquire a wealth of academic knowledge to deal with a diverse array of medical problems within a broad patient population. In addition, the constant technological advancements within the field dictate that radiologists must be adaptable and dedicated to continuously educate themselves and keep informed of all new developments. My medical training, strong work ethic, and disciplined self-management skills prepare me for any and all of these challenging attributes of the profession.

I was raised in a family that has always placed great emphasis on hard work, integrity, and commitment. I pride myself on the strong work ethic they have instilled in me. I am also a personable and energetic individual. Over the years I have been active in many groups and committees and I have participated in a number of volunteer activities and organizations. Several of these extracurricular activities have placed me in a leadership role, for example, student council president. Participation in these activities attests to my ability to work well with others as well as independently. In addition, these positions have helped me develop competent decision making skills.

I have demonstrated my interest and commitment to this career choice through elective and research work. Several of my facilitators have commented highly on my technical skills and passionate work habits. I am fully aware of the demands placed on a Radiology resident and I optimistically anticipate the challenge.

My preference for the Diagnostic Radiology Program at __________ is based on several factors. Most important is the fact that ________ has an established and well respected department of Diagnostic Radiology. The program is nationally renowned for its quality of education and reputation for producing radiologists of the highest caliber. It would be an honor to be a part of this reputation. I had the opportunity to experience first hand the exceptional level of teaching by staff and residents during my elective here. It was evident that there is a high level of resident satisfaction lending to a favorable work environment which is further strengthened by the positive staff-resident relations. From my experiences at _______ and other universities at which I have completed electives it is my opinion that no other Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program can match what ________ has to offer.

Thank you for considering me as a candidate and I look forward to meeting with you to further discuss my qualifications.
